Flowering conditions were not uneven across Marlborough with some sub-regions achieving a good set and crop load and others below average. Vigilance around disease pressure was paramount, with rain events, unusual humidity and warm nights through much of December and January. Day temperatures were cool, delaying the vine’s physiological advancement. Marlborough breathed a sigh of relief as cyclone Gabrielle minimally impacted the region in February, while wreaking havoc through much of the North Island. Fewer inflorescences generally and then a protracted flowering window in November and December, resulted in a poor fruit set and fewer berries per bunch than average in most areas of Marlborough. Dry conditions persisted for the duration of the growing season, minimising disease threats and resulting in clean fruit at harvest. A spell of warm weather through late December and January, in combination with the lighter crop, resulted in a rapid physiological advancement against the long-term average. This trend continued until the start of harvest in early March. Fortuitously, the headwaters of the Wairau and Awatere River systems received enough rain to keep irrigation schemes open through the season and into harvest, at which point a return to cool, crisp days became the norm.

Grape Growing: The fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from the Fairhall Vineyard in the Rapaura district of the Wairau Valley. Flowering conditions in November and December were not even across Marlborough with some sub-regions achieving a good set and crop load, and others below average. Vigilance around disease pressure was paramount, with regular rain events through the season and unusual humidity and warm nights through much of December and January. Day temperatures were cool, delaying the vine’s physiological advancement. Marlborough breathed a sigh of relief as cyclone Gabrielle minimally impacted the region in February, while wreaking havoc through much of the North Island. The season turned a corner for Marlborough in early March with a return to cool nights and sunnier conditions allowing us to delay harvest, resulting in fruit that reached good sugar levels with attractive flavours, while disease levels remained low. Fewer inflorescences generally and then a protracted flowering window in November and December, resulted in poor fruit set and fewer berries per bunch than the average in most areas. Dry conditions persisted for the duration of the growing season, minimising disease threats and resulting in clean fruit at harvest. A spell of warm weather through late December and January, in combination with the lighter crop, resulted in a rapid physiological advancement against the long term average. This trend continued until the start of harvest in early March, ahead of earlier predictions in late 2023. Fortuitously, the headwaters of the Wairau and Awatere river systems received enough rain to keep irrigation schemes open through the season and into harvest, at which point a return to cool, crisp days became the norm. Fruit was harvested at more elevated sugar levels than the previous two seasons. Peak intake for the winery was from the 13th March through to the 29th March.

Winemaking: The hand-picked fruit was de-stemmed then crushed, before loading into our small bag-press. Fewer inflorescences and then a protracted flowering window in November and December, resulted in poor fruit set and fewer berries per bunch. Dry conditions persisted for the duration of the growing season, minimising disease threats and resulting in clean fruit. A spell of warm weather through late December and January, in combination with the lighter crop, resulted in a rapid physiological advancement. This trend continued until the start of harvest in early March. Fortuitously, the headwaters of the Wairau and Awatere river systems received enough rain to keep irrigation schemes open through the season and into harvest, at which point a return to cool, crisp days became the norm. Fruit was harvested at more elevated sugar levels than the previous two seasons.

Grape Growing: Sourced from three estate-grown or managed vineyards - 11% from Pauls Road, 38% from Holmewood (Rapaura) and 51% from Little Alfred (Southern Valleys). Fewer inflorescences generally and then a protracted flowering window in November and December resulted in poor fruit set and fewer berries per bunch than the average in most areas. Dry conditions persisted for the duration of the growing season, minimising disease threats and resulting in clean fruit at harvest. A spell of warm weather through late December and January, in combination with the lighter crop, resulted in a rapid physiological advancement against the long-term average. At the winery, the fruit was gently loaded into our de-stemmer, and by using a conveyor the berries were loaded directly into various small, open-top stainless-steel tanks. After 5-6 days of cold soak, the must was allowed to warm and fermentation began, utilising either a wild yeast or inoculated with a selected strain. Following ferment, the wine was pressed off and settled overnight, then gently pumped to French oak barrels (21% new). The wine was left to mature for 10 months and then racked to tank. The wine was filtered and finally bottled on the 1st of March, 2024.

[[/Details]]

[[Accolades]]

ACCOLADES

Taking advantage of Whitehaven’s access to 35 sites across Marlborough’s three main sub-regions, this is a blend of fruit (and clones) from the clay-based soils of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys with vineyards in the cool, windy Awatere Valley. Vines are trained to two or three canes on a vertical trellis, with balanced pruning, shoot thinning, tucking, and trimming to achieve an open, healthy canopy and clean, ripe fruit.

Climate: Unlike the previous two years, the growing season leading into the 2024 vintage began after a dry winter, with the soil water balance in deficit. Fewer inflorescences generally and then a protracted flowering window in November and December, resulted in poor fruit set and fewer berries per bunch than the average in most areas. Dry conditions persisted for the duration of the growing season, minimising disease threats and resulting in clean fruit at harvest.

Winemaking: The fruit was hand-picked and immediately whole-bunch pressed. The heavy pressings were kept separate to minimise the phenolics. The free run juice was lightly settled overnight, before being racked to a stainless-steel tank, where it was inoculated to start fermentation. Halfway through fermentation, the wine was transferred to French oak of which 22% was new, 10% one year old and 68% older oak and predominantly 500L puncheons. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and was aged in barrel on lees, for 10 months, before being blended to tank and filtered ahead of bottling.

[[/Details]]

[[Accolades]]

ACCOLADES

Complex and stylish, the wine exhibits aromas of apricot, rock melon, vanilla, and roasted hazelnut, with a hint of brioche. The vines are pruned to two canes on a vertical shoot positioned trellis. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking, and trimming are used to achieve balanced vines, a healthy canopy and clean fruit, before the on-set of late harvest botrytis (bunch infection approx. 50%) which is ideal for this style of wine.

Climate: Similar to the previous season, the 2023 growing season started with soil moisture at capacity following a wet winter. Flowering conditions in November and December were not even across Marlborough with some sub-regions achieving a good set and crop load and others below average set. Vigilance around disease pressure was paramount, with regular rain events through the season and unusual humidity and warm nights through much of December and January. Day time temperatures were not warm, delaying the vine’s physiological advancement. Marlborough breathed a sigh of relief as cyclone Gabrielle minimally impacted the region in February, while wreaking havoc through much of the North Island. The season turned a corner for Marlborough in early March with a return to cool nights and sunnier conditions allowing us to delay harvest foras long as possible, resulting in fruit that reached good sugar levels with attractive flavours, while disease levels remained low and manageable. Fruit condition remained very good through until the end of harvest.

Winemaking: The fruit for this wine was hand-harvested on a cool May morning. At the winery, the fruit was destemmed and crushed, then allowed to soak in our press overnight for maximum flavour extraction. The following day the juice was pressed off and was then allowed to settle for 48 hours. After this settling period, the clear juice was racked off and fermentation was then started with a selected yeast strain. Higher than average inflorescence numbers and then one of the most perfect and quick flowering periods in memory ensured a very high crop potential and full bunches. By mid-season, grapevine phenology was tracking well in advance of the long-term average. This changed in the second half of the season with milder growing conditions and the larger crop slowing ripening down. Substantial fruit thinning was often required to ensure timely ripeness at harvest. Dry conditions in the lead up to harvest, along with the clean flowering, ensured disease pressure remained low. Vintage commenced in early March, with the majority of fruit harvested in the last 2 weeks of March and early April. Conditions remained dry and fruit remained in excellent condition.

Grape Growing: Fruit for this wine came from Whitehaven’s Rapaura site, and Riverstone Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. At the winery the grapes were destemmed and crushed before being pumped to the press. We let this must sit overnight in the press, before pressing off the following morning. The juice was then let to settle for 48 hours and then the clear juice was racked off and warmed for fermentation, using an aromatic yeast strain. The ferment was regularly tasted and then stopped when we felt the balance of the wine was right. We then let the wine sit on light lees for 3-4 months, before stabilizing and filtering. The wine was then bottled on the 22nd October, 2025.

[[/Details]]

[[Accolades]]

ACCOLADES

2026 Mundus Vini Spring Tasting, Silver

Aromas of Turkish delight, old fashioned red roses and raspberry marshmallow-like flavours all combine on the nose of this Gewürztraminer. The wine is named in recognition of Greg White’s admiration and love for his three daughters.

The wine was produced from Pinot Noir fruit from our Little Alfred vineyard in Marlborough’s Omaka Valley. A select parcel of fruit was handpicked at low Brix (19.6) to capture delicate flavours with bright acidity, and then gently whole bunch pressed to extract clean, pure juice for fermentation into base wine with a neutral yeast strain. Once primary fermentation was complete, the wine rested on lees (yeast sediment) for 6 months before it underwent malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity and microbially stabilise the wine. The wine was then bottled with a small addition of sugar and yeast (tirage) and underwent a second fermentation in bottle which produced additional alcohol and trapped carbon dioxide in the bottle (giving the bubbly effect upon opening in the finished wine). The wine was then aged on lees in bottle for 28 months, developing complexing, savoury and toasty notes. The final stages of the process was to move the sediment to the neck of the bottle (riddling) before expelling the lees from the bottle in a frozen plug (disgorging), re-topping the bottle with a small volume of sweetened wine (dosage), and finally corking the bottle.<span style="text-decoration: They use the same grape varieties, in this case solely Pinot Noir, which gives this dry sparkling rosé its pink hue and its aromas of raspberries, red currants and dried strawberries, which are held together here in a vibrantly youthful style of bubbly - newly disgorged, containing 3.7 grams per litre of residual grape sweetness and a long finish. Conditions remained dry and fruit remained in excellent condition throughout the harvest period.

Harvest Date: Two picks on 28th February 2025.

Winemaking: Fruit was machine harvested in the early morning and destemmed in the vineyard to preserve aromatic freshness. The short transport distance (500m and 8km) allowed excellent control over colour extraction, while still enabling a brief period of skin contact. Minimal maceration time was used in the press, with close attention to colour development. Free-run juice was kept separate from press fractions. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures using selected yeast to retain purity of fruit and freshness.

Winemaker: Diana Katardzhieva

[[/Details]]

[[Accolades]]

ACCOLADES

"Citrusy, vivid and juicy, showing fresh flowers, Meyer lemons and frozen strawberries.
