The wine was pressed immediately after ferment, with the heavy pressings being separated to aid the silky texture. After racking, the wine was transferred to tight-grained French oak barriques for 15 months ageing. 38% of this oak was new. Malolactic fermentation was allowed to occur naturally in Spring. No fining or filtration was used on this wine, adding to its complexity and longevity. During the growing season, the vines were methodically shoot thinned, trimmed, leaf plucked and fruit thinned to ensure favourable ripening, clean fruit and to maximise flavour. The temperatures were similar to the long term average, but varied greatly with a number of warm days followed by cold spells. Colder conditions over flowering resulted in average yields. In late December, the climate became very warm and dry, ideal conditions for ripening. The fermentation temperatures generally peaked at 32degrees C. The wine was pressed immediately after ferment, with the heavy pressings being separated to aid the silky texture. After racking, the wine was transferred to tight grained French oak barriques for 10 months ageing. 33% of this oak was new. Malolactic fermentation was allowed to occur naturally in Spring. Pleasingly, the region did not suffer any major frost events and despite conditions in November being a little wet, the warmth that went with it meant that flowering was not drawn out and resulted in good fruit set and the prospect of healthy yields. The remainder of the season was punctuated by cooler weather and rainfall events and we were vigilant around disease pressure as we entered the harvest period. Harvest was later this year and Brix accumulation was slow. We experienced another rain event in the final third of March which then required us to harvest as quickly as possible in many blocks in order to retain pure fruit expression. This is where Whitehaven’s new receival building came to the fore, allowing greater throughput while maintaining the quality focus and attention to detail that Whitehaven prides itself on.

Grape Growing: We are proud to source the fruit for this wine from a single vineyard in the Awatere valley, a legacy that has continued for a number of years.

Vines are pruned to between two and three canes on a vertical shoot positioned trellis. Vigilance around disease pressure was paramount, with regular rain events through the season and unusual humidity and warm nights through much of December and January. Day time temperatures were not warm, delaying the vine’s physiological advancement. Marlborough breathed a sigh of relief as cyclone Gabrielle minimally impacted the region in February, while sadly wreaking havoc through much of the North Island. The season turned a corner for Marlborough in early March with a return to cool nights and sunnier conditions allowing us to delay harvest for as long as possible, resulting in fruit that reached good sugar levels with attractive flavours, while disease levels remained at low manageable levels.

Grape Growing: Fruit for the Greg Chardonnay is sourced from Balvonie Vineyard (formerly known as Rothay). The juice was lightly settled before being racked and inoculated with selected yeast in stainless steel vessels. Halfway through fermentation, the wine was transferred from tank to French oak puncheons (40% new). The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and was aged on light lees with occasional lees stirring for 16 months, adding layers of texture, creaminess, and body weight. In order to retain maximum expression, flavour and mouthfeel, the wine has been bottled without fining nor filtration. As a result, a small sediment may develop which is perfectly natural and harmless. Certified Appellation Marlborough Wine, and Vegan Friendly.

[[/Details]]

[[Accolades]]

ACCOLADES

Highly Recommended from Halliday Wine Companion NZ Tasting (silver, 90-93 pts).

A wine in a perfect drinking window with a bouquet of barrel spice and peach, some smoky wood qualities and nectarine, there’s a fine tannin quality on the palate accentuated by the acid line.
